This winter has been our coldest for many years in the UK, down to minus 18 degrees celcius in some parts of Scotland. The sudden drop in humidity made my SJ unplayable when my friend borrowed it for a gig yesterday evening. Much to my dismay, the bass strings rattled just about all the way down the fretboard. This was my third build and has remained my favourite. I've placed him back in his case along with a damp sponge wrapped in a perforated plasic bag keeping my fingers crossed that this will do the trick. I built this one 2007/2008 and it has never been out of the house until now. I have two hygrometers in the room where I keep my guitars, one digital reading 37% and the other, a little dial "Pick Boy" reading around 32% at present, whereas the the room normally sits at 45-55%. This drastic change has certainly made me sit up and take note!

Put it on a stand in your bathroom .. close the door, run the shower hot with no exhaust fan, to steam up the room, do this a couple times on consequtive days - the guitar will love it.

There is a more efficient way to rehumidify the guitar . Take a small sponge and wet it , place that in a small plastic cup and put inside the guitars . Place that in the case laying flat or put it in a plastic bag with the water and seal . The guitar will take a few days to equalize . Once you get it back to health keep a humidifier in the case with the guitar .

Being in the UK too the humidity now is 30% here I just adjusted the truss rod on one of my guitars as it had a rattle should I buy a humidifier?
