I have a collection of sanding blocks and use anything from Aluminum to foam rubber . FRETS is a reference on my puter to. A great service to anyone that like guitars. There isn't more I can ad. I use PSA sandpaper for many blocks . I love the stuff from 60 to 120 grit

I keep a set of those cheap black rubber sanding blocks with varying grits from 120 to 320. I use spray adhesive to hold the paper tight. Sand the bottom of each block flat before you start as many have contures or mold marks.
Above 320 grit I usually use fingers.

Not many truly flat surfaces on a guitar so hard blocks don't really make sense.

I use a Pink Pearl eraser, or a cork block used for waxing cross country skis.

I use UHMW plastic blocks for really getting a surface dead flat and felt blocks for everything else including wet sanding a finish. The UHMW is great for use with rolls of PSA sandpaper because the sticky glue is easy to clean off where that's not the case with wood.

My Bosch ROS has pads of various densities. I use the hardest.

For hand sanding, I use 2" x 2" x 1/4" thick acrylic for pre-finish prep on the body, except the waist, and the front and back of the headstock. The same for leveling the finish. After the finish is level, I use the dense foam pad that comes with the Micro-Mesh kits. I find that the flatter everything is, the less sand-through I get, important to me since I brush on varnish.

I use auto body shop sanding blocks - recommended by my nephew who does auto body work on the side....

Durablocks are the ones - they are some sort of medium/soft poly foam....

They made all the difference in my finish quality and speed....
