I cut my channels by hand - I am working through the oder of how I am going to install binding and purfling. I wanted to ask - does anyone install the binding first and then inlay the purfling ? I think this may be easier for me. So i would glue the binding and tape it and then wrap with string. Then once dry remove the tape and string and then I should have a channel to inlay my purfling (my my case veneer lines). Does anyone do it this way ?

John: Not following your thought process. Where does the channel for the purfling come from....?

The problem is the little purfling channel will partially fill with glue. I've done it before doing the purfling first and then the binding. It worked okay, but then you have the extra step of cleaning up the glue squeezeout before you can glue in binding. Now I think it's easier to do it all at once. It gets a little messy, especially if you try to use too much glue.

I haven't tried using CA (superglue), but a big advantage of it is you can tape everything in place first and wick in thin glue. I don't like the fumes so I try to limit my use of CA.

John, unless you have something in the "purfling channel", (like teflon strips used when installing shell purfling using this method), the binding is likely to collapse (or at least lean) into the purf channel under the string/tape pressure.

John: OK now I gather you have cut both binding and purfling channels.Normally most people install binding and purfling in one go. Not sure why you would not want to do it that way.To easy to cause yourself extra problems and work in my mind by installing seperate.

When I install top purflings, I install the purflings then the side purflings then the binding, last, or I glue the side purflings to the binding. Do not try to install top purflings with the bindings if you have any width to the top purflings. You'll have a mess, and it may result in gaps. I usually have to clean the channels a bit after installing the top purflings to make sure everything is going to be a good fit.

I used to put them all at once (up to 6 bunches of strips) but it tends to be nerve wrecking, so lately I would glue the face purfling first on full-mitters backs. This is where a risk of gaps is more present. It is more time gluing twice and cleaning in between sessions but a little easier on the nerve. I wouldn't try doing the binding first.

Here is a pic. That wood fuzziness next to the purfling is because I already started to scrub for binding. The binding is doubled by an additional double strip, plus the side purfling. These 3 come all together in the 2nd session.

I think I will put my purfling first - I am not confident in my cut - I am using 5 or 6 strips of walnut veneer to make my purfling on the back - so i can fill gaps easily. Are you using pins to hold the purfling in place while the glue dries ?
