My last build featured a florentine cutaway. I chose not to bind the point of the cutaway. The next time I'm thinking about binding the point. So, I'm wondering what the best method is to do this. For those that have done it, could you share your technique?

Kent, That thread doesn't show how the binding channel is cut... I'd like to see how this is done. Do you use a router? Can one piece of binding be used at the point? What about the corner at the top of the cutaway? Do you use a router for there? I'd like to hear how folks are doing this...

We have done it a couple different ways since the thread kent posted for you, honestly I like using hand tools, and the last florentine that we bound I took my backsaw and cut the edge of the binding channel on either side of the florentine and used a chisel to chisel out the side material down to the backing block. Once the tip was cut down to the backing block I took two pieces of binding and fit them to the channels which were made. It was fast and relatively easy. Probably not the best way to do it, but hey it worked and was kinda fun.

Best way to do it IMO is to cut the binding channel by hand and to do it before you've put the top or back on. Much easier this way. Also install the binding before you put the top or back on, again much easier this way. You can use a solid piece of wood for the binding tip if you want and just shape it after you've glued it on, again before you put the top or back on, much easier this way

There is no easy way to do the mitres on the top and back other than just a lot of practice getting the binding and purfling lines the correct length. Practice, practice practice
