Hi!

I recently spent 300$ on a Veritas #6, some big money on different Grobet files, Auriou rasps and other good quality (expensive..) hand tools. I keep my files, rasps and chisels in a cloth pocket, and I can see they are slowly rusting, especially when I don't use 'em for few days. I'm also worried about my plane's sole. So, what kind of sealer or protector can I use on them that won't stain of affect wood.

I saw this product at LeeValley, but i'm still worried about the effect on wood, for glue seam or in sight of the finish.

Thanks to all
Francis

I use these emitter zip bags under my handplanes in their drawer and so far no rust:

My planes and any Cast Iron in my shop gets a light spray of a mix of 1/2 block of Gulfwax Pariffin grated with a cheese grater into a 16oz spray bottle of Mineral Spirits when the seasons change. Let it dry, buff and no rust. It's the ingredient in most commercial sprays and only cost me $.30 per batch. Get it at most grocery stores in the canning section.

I asked this same question a month or two ago. I have several hand planes, but my shop is not humidity controlled, so corrosion can be a problem. You can literally almost watch it grow on unprotected metal. The overwhelming response I got was Camelia oil. However, i can't find a local source, and so will wait until I have a large enough order to place and will add the camellia oil then.
In the meantime, I'm using Minwax paste finishing wax. I emailed minwax asking if this product contained silicone. Although they wouldn't go into specifics on what it contained, I was told they're 99% certain it contained no silicone.
The reason I went ahead and used it is, firstly, that I needed some type of protection yesterday, not tomorrow. Also, according to my research many cabinet shops and wood shops have used this forever to protect things like table saw and band saw tabletops. Since they glue and finish wood and have experienced no problems(if they had, this practice would have ceased long ago) I think I'm pretty safe. We shall see.
