I do have a lot going on, there is a stack of 5 boxes ready for necks and 2 just started. I have two mandolins to finish by the end of the year, and did also just finish this...retired?



Driving it down to Iowa City on Tuesday.
Got the bridge glued on last nite, and I'm a fret job, nut and saddle away from stringing it up. Maybe today.
Peter, the box is 18" wide. It's got a little too much flash for me, but it is a "Cowboy" guitar...at least it doesn't say Patsy on the F/B. Really looking forward to hearing this one!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Stella... I mean stellar. That is one Big Bad Boy. 18"! I'd love to try that one. What do you find works best for you to bend the rope purfling Haans? I think I've done a rosette on a pipe. I'm ready to bind a parlour with some rope in the top.

I did get it strung yesterday, but I have to take the action down just a tad. Was just too tired to take photos. Sound is BIG as you would expect and I have to make some individual string changes. .052 is just too rubbery for the bottom end on a short scale. Trebles are still trying to come out (red spruce) but sound much better this morning than yesterday. Very fundamental as red is, and crisp and clear...

Oval and Billy T, I just took a photo of a 19" Larson box and "enlarged" it to 18" in photoshop, then printed out a copy.
Danny, I use a herringbone that I soak in hot water for a bit, then split in half. That way it bends pretty well. Never have tried to bend the stuff on a pipe. I think I tried some rope a while back and just soaked it for a while. Worked well.
Terry, I'm using the last of my McFaddens, then I will switch to Mohawk.
Jack, Guardian makes a Jumbo case that is 18". I think TKL makes one too. It's the Gibson Jumbo I think, but the Prairie State just fits.

Its a little strange that you went from parlors to 18 inch super jumbos. Are you using a martin bridge or a larson pyramid.

Please don't put on a Martin bridge! It wouldn't be right.

I do love the Larson Bros. instruments. I visited Frank Montuoro some time ago and got to see some Larson Bros. guitars he was restoring. Very cool.
