I finished the neck using Minwax Rub On Poly following Zlurgh's suggestions. Rubbed on with a small piece of paper towel, about 6 coats, I liked the way it worked so went ahead and did the box also. After curing about a week I rubbed it out with some rottenstone on a piece of felt to make it a bit less glossy.

Best news, it plays and sounds good. A bit different than the smaller bodied grand concert and parlor sizes I usually build. My first paddle head also, just have a thing for slot-heads.

Did you make the neck? I like the way you did the end graft and the stained top has a neat look to it. Did you do standard Martin bracing for a dreadnaught?

The Wipe On Polyurethane is so easy to apply it almost feels like your cheating. Wait until you see how durable those six thin coats are, you're going to like that finish even more.

Is there a thread to the wipe-on poly suggestion? I used it on a neckthrough once, but I'm considering it for my own 12-fret dreadnaught that I will be working on in 2 weeks.

Joe - that is a beautiful dread! I have not always appreciated slope shoulder dreads but they are really starting to grow on me.

Nice work Joe! Everything ties together nicely. Love the end graft and stained top with tortise pickgaurd!

Beauty Joe! Bet it sounds great. Back strap looks great especially with those tuners. I like the laminated butt strip too. That finish looks like it would make a nice playing neck. I'll have to keep my eyes open for some. Is it fairly new on the market?

Yes Darryl, I made the neck and I assume this is standard martin bracing. I believe JJ got the drawing from John Hall who is the go-to guy for martin info. Here's a pic before closing up the box.


I also sealed the inside of this box with a coat of shellac, a first, still on the fence about it.

I'm not sure how long it's been around Danny, that was the first I'd heard of it, got at Home Depo.

Charlie the top was stained with trans-tint dyes diluted with water, and applied with an airbrush. Honey amber overall, then golden brown and reddish brown to give a very subtle burst. I used to just rub them on with a rag but was having trouble with getting even gradations on some tops so Haan's steered me to using an airbrush, much easier to control.
