Here's a new purfling and rosette for a parlor I've been working on...dyed green veneer, pink ivory with .010" black fibre separations and holly. B/W/B/W/B fibre trim.

Rosette.

Really like the simplicity and the colour combinations. Looks great!
Did you just pick this talent up yourself through trial and error or did you find some tutorials on making purfling, binding and rosette logs?

Great looking purfling Haans, and that's a good looking wide grained adirondack top too..I'm a big fan of your guitars and mandolins, ... they are so classic looking!
best regards,
jack

Looks awesome Haans. Is the skip in your rosette pattern a trademark? You have two sets of 3 blocks together on the hi 'e' side of the rosette with no green block separating them.

Shane.

Thanks guys!
Alan, I didn't use a gramil, but rubbed in a couple of coats of lacquer and dried it with a heat gun. Usually works well with red spruce. Engelmann is a bit more of a problem as it is softer, but if you are careful, and make sure the lacquer is good and dry, it works too. This is actually a re-do as the rosette was red dot and dash before I decided to make one of the three parlors I'm building with the new purf. Yea, I like wide grain red when I can get it...
Wow Shane, that's a hoot! It was getting pretty late when I was glueing in the pieces, one of them must have been broken and missing a section. Think it will be a trademark on this instrument...maybe I'll rout that section out and do it again. Depends on whether I think I can do it...
Rick, I just figured it out. I originally wanted to copy a Stahl pattern I saw with the red purf, and I thought about it for a while and just figured out how to do it. It's not that hard to do, and once you get the block glued up, it, you are about done with the messy part. I've been thinking about this one for quite a while too. Here are some "early attempts"...
I didn't like the RED color so substituted pink ivory and like it better. It usually takes some time to get your "specs" down to get it right, and I find a dial calipers essential aside from just a lot of staring and making mock-ups.

I've been trying to sort of emulate this Maurer look in the purf.

Thanks Waddy, Jack and Todd! I appreciate your input.

Anyone looking for cheap dyed veneer, check out Herzog veneers. They have a pretty good selection of colors and it's a lot cheaper than you know who...

I like it a lot, too. And that Maurer is a treat! I get tired of lots of pearl and shell on guitars, like its expected.

Again, thanks guys!
Douglas, you hit that nail on the head.
Terry, anytime. Just let me know.
Glenn, I can't sell strips of purfling as it's put together like abalone purfling. It's easy enough to make if you really want to.
Shane, my wife says keep it the way it is. Signature, hand of God, late nite, whatever. Might be interesting to do on a regular basis...introduce an element of non-symmetry into the purfling so long as it isn't glaring...

Hans, me hat's off to ya mate...that's beautiful.
And Shane too! I had to really study that pic to see the "error".
Don't worry about it, at all.

Would you be willing to do a tutorial on the process you go through to get this kind of results? This is real quality. I love this stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Guys, you can find the basic tutorial on my website here:

http://www.brentrup.com/page3/page3.html

Scroll down about 1/3 page and it starts on the left but continues on the right.

Helps to stare at a lot of awning fabric...

Looks like you have a bit of it going on too, Mike.

Nice work sir!! I love a bit of color on a guitar.... [clap] [:Y:] [clap] [:Y:] [clap]

I use Herzog (on eBay and direct) for most of my dyed veneers for marquetry and purfling - their stuff is good quality and, as you say, cheap! :D

Cheers,
Dave F.

I have to agree! Symmetry isn't always "all that!" It's about balance and a sense of humour. I actually like it lot!

Well the Navajos thought that evil spirits could escape only through an error in their work. Persian rug makers always incorporate a mistake to show that no man is perfect.
My kind of belief system.

I hear you Waddy, me too!

I've I'm not mistaken then, I believe that raises our quality of product "above" all those unfortunate builders turning out those "perfect" guitars. laughing6-hehe
