I was bending my ukulele sides when I heard "snap"!!! The first side broke, so I tried the second and "snap"!!! Luckily it was just spruce, but for my om I bent the sides using the same pipe heat gun method and it came out perfect. Now I have to order more spruce and try this again. Any tips bending spruce?

How thick are your sides? I use the same pipe for guitars and ukes too...but I thin the uke sides to ~0.07" while guitars are more like 0.085" Uke bends are much tighter than guitars
I haven't tried bending spruce so far but I guess I would start trying around 0.075 to 0.08"

Yo, 'hole

flat sawn spruce bends easier. Use a thin metal back up strip. Go slow like a turtle stuck in molasses.

and whats dis "ordering spruce" stuff...just go to your local lumber yard and pick up a few sticks of 2 x 6...cheap like borscht.

Thanks. Padma after reading your post I looked at the pile of old 2 by 4s going to the trash because of my recent shop renovations and I found a really nice piece of QS spruce and QS cedar, but the cedar is a chocolate color not red so I thing that would look cool for this uke. I'm debating spruce or cedar sides now.

So then why not bend sides with one and use the other for linings and bracing.

simple eh....just remember...don't rip the bracing on a table saw... "split" the bracing out with an axe or a suitable blade to eliminate run out.

good luck
