Does anyone remember who was making and selling brass fingerplanes on the OLF a few years back? I can't remember who that was and can't find it in the search.

I had an exchange with Mark a while back, he's a really nice bloke but he said back then that he's not making the planes anymore. Demand was high but due to time constraints and family commitments he decided to can the idea.

Pity because the one I have is a great little plane and I would like another.

I talk to him once in a while. I'll see if he's interested in going back into production.

They aren't too difficult to make although perhaps a little time consuming. I made these with very basic metal/plumbing tools.

Made from thick walled Brass tube, heated and then simply hit with a hammer to form a more elongated shape. The sole is made from flat Brass stock (actually an old large door hinge) and brazed on using plumbers solder and flux. Back in the days when I made these planes that coin was the only money I had. Things haven't improved much since.

St. James Bay Tool Co. makes some great small brace shaving planes like the one pictured above. Just go to their website and click on Luthier tools. I ordered one of their small planes years ago and it works great.
