It seems that on every build I have trouble with the same thing over and over and over again . For me its a small thing , but i seem to manage to do it everytime . " Filing the nut " Getting the nut slots straight seems to elude me, I will almost ALWAYS have at least one thats crooked ! [headinwall] gaah Drives me batty !!

Whats the one thing that seems to Haunt you in your Builds everytime.

Yo, Wud,

Breath in breath out and then push the file.

Breath in breath out, push the file.

Breath in breath out, push the file.

Any thought or emotion in our being is transferred to the blade, file edge or brush stroke.

Or as Leonardo da Vincie said "anything manifested by the being is an indication of the inner being."

They say when the breath stops, the monkeys in the mind stop.

So...only cut at that moment between breaths.

Is simple

Breath in breath out, push the file.

Give that a go. See how that works.

Filling every last darn rosewood pore with pumice, same for the odd small pit in the mosaic rosettes. These buggers tends to show up when French polishing is well underway.

I have a similar problem with ZPoxy. I tried a different approach this time. I thinned the first coat down with alcohol to get some wicking action down a little more into the pores. That and getting the surface nice and warm. I'll do the sand down tonight or tomorrow and well see how it turned out. Since I'm going to French polish, I also figure any nuance pores that didn't get filled, I'll pumice fill. The nice thing is that you can pumice fill at any stage of French polishing. (per MDP)

The same problem that I have, every time, is that "Oh, no. Here we go again..." look from my wife when I start a new guitar.

I don't understand. I never file a nut slot straight. In addition to angling the slot down about half the headstock angle, I always aim the rear of the slot toward the corresponding tuner post. They're never straight, and the back end is usually a little wider than the front end of the slot.

That's what I was thinking, too...That's the way I do mine.
[:Y:]

It would be easier to make the slots straight (square to the nut) but is that the best way?

For every error I correct, I move on to make a new one on the next build. It's an error-correcting lifetime :)

Thanks for the suggestion Filippo but you've got the wrong dimensions in mind. When looking at the rim assembly from the top of the instrument the neck block and tail block aren't in line with each other, so picture a line running down the length of the instrument and the neck block is to the left of the center and the tail block to the right or vice versa. Going to try putting solid linings on before I attatch the sides. If the sides themselves are congruent to each other and I mount them correctly on the blocks I should get them straight. Also trying a new mold so we'll see how that goes. Hopefully I don't encounter many more problems after this is fixed.
