Just thought y'all would enjoy seeing these photos of an awesome guitar built by Jordan McConnell. He's the superb guitarist for the Duhks - a GREAT band that you have to see live, if you haven't already.

Jordan is one of our local luthiers. I look forward to meeting him one of these days, if he would only ever stay home long enough from touring! I second that the Duhks are a great band.

We also have: Daryl Perry, Alan Beardsell, and Florian Vorretier

What a great wealth of lutherie talent you've got there, Douglas! I'm amazed that Jordan has found the time to design and build such a beautiful, richly detailed guitar in between tours, daily instrument practice (which he must spend hours doing to be so good on both guitar and uilleann pipes), recording, etc.

You've got that right! The kind of guitar shown is a very mature work, not the kind of guitar that you can build without a good number of hours at the workbench. Jordan often goes over to Daryl for critiques of his work, I'm sure that helps a lot.

Its helped me the few times that I've show Daryl my work. Daryl started out as a canoe builder, and I've had him over to the shop a few times. Last time he looked around and said, "There sure are a lot of guitar parts here for a canoe shop!".

Google the names above, your jaw will drop. Those are just a few of the professional guitar builders that I know, I'm not even counting everybody else!

Winnipeg has a great wealth of all kinds of talent, not just music, not just lutherie; it really is incredible for a city of this size. The community is also very supportive, which helps, and creative people can afford to live and work here. Winnipeg is also a very overlooked place-not an obvious destination place. While no one is really paying much attention we all just put our shoulders to the task and go on doing our work and making our art.

BTW, the Duhks' (the band formerly know as Scrooge McDuhk) banjo player Leonard Podolak's father, Mitch Podolak, is the founder of the Winnipeg Folk Festival 37 years ago. So Len grew up surrounded by music and musicians like few of us ever could.

[:Y:]

I passed through Winnipeg once, nearly 30 years ago, hitch-hiking across Canada with my girlfriend. Everything you say tells me I have to plan to go back there again!

Wow, that is gorgeous. Of Winnipeg, you can't forget about Neil Young, The Guess Who and from that, Bachman Turner Overdrive and Burton Cummings. A fantastic musical town.

Thanks, Douglas! Much appreciated! I'd likely have my wife and two daughters along with me, though...

Me too.

Plenty of room.

I really should get spousal agreements on such invitations before I make them! duh

I was wondering, how did you come across those photos of Jordan's guitar? His web page is quite basic right now, and Sam's photos are promoting his photography, so its pretty obscure.

The craftmanship of this instrument is superb. My opinion could not have been informed without the spectacular photography that highlighted every detail. Particularly, I noted the shots that use light reflections to reveal the even finish. Quite beautiful work...and presentation!!

THIS is how one presents a guitar on the internet.

Yeah, the photography is stellar.

I'm friends with a musician - Lydia Garrison Damiano - who has played and performed with Jordan. Though I've seen them perform together, I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting Jordan face-to-face. However, through Lydia, and through our common interest in guitar making, I've become friends with Jordan on facebook. He posted some of these photos there, along with the link to the web site I linked to above.

I agree, that guitar photos are top notch.

So, Todd, do you realize that we are only 4 degrees of separation apart? Me to Daryl, Daryl to Jordan, Jordan to Lydia, Lydia to you. How about that?

Cool, Douglas.

BTW, what I meant to say was "performed and recorded with Jordan." Google the "Turtle Duhks". They have at least one CD out. Lydia is a wonderful fiddler, and a fine clawhammer banjo player and guitar player as well. She's one of the many stellar musicians here in the Ithaca area. We're very blessed here as well.
