I have a 2nd grade ebony violin fingerboard with that pattern too, though even more pronounced. The spots are much more black than the rest of the wood, as well as reflecting differently. No idea what causes it, but it's kind of cool in a way.

The only thing I've inlaid here recently is a zero clearance insert on a freakin bandsaw!!! laughing6-hehe

is put some eyes on those whales, and then maybe some small ab dots over their blow holes.

I see those spots in ebony blanks now all the time .. I think its some kind of mineral stain.
