To those who build steel strings with slotted pegheads: What is the distance from the center of the post on the first and third tuners of either side to the end of the respective slot? In other words, how much room is necessary to make it easy to change strings?

Typically the distance between each peg is 1 3/8", my slots are 4" long with the holes centered on that, so just a little over 1/2" on either end of the outer pegs.

Thanks for the reply, John. Actually, I'm not looking for the spacing between the tuners posts themselves, but the amount of space between the tuner posts and the ends of the slots, to determine how much space is needed to facilitate changing strings.

1/2 inch is what I used and it looks about right. My slots have semi-circular ends, so that's 1/2 inch from post to the top of the semi-circle
You can use more or less depending on what looks good to you. You don't need that much space to clear the string windings

Thanks, Quine. I actually just came up from the shop after making a jig with 1/2" of clearance, and it looks right to me, too.
