I'm making a new neck for a friend's 12-string to replace the twisted original neck. This is a budget job on a 60's semi-hollow body electric. We're looking for inexpensive vintage style tuners and the economy covered gear tuners from StewMac look like they'd work http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guitar,_solid_peghead_tuners/Economy_Tuners/Economy_Covered_Gear_Tuners.html

Anybody have any experience with these? I'd appreciate your opinions.

Steve,

I have used these tuners on my student model dulcimers to keep the price down.
They seem to be holding up well. For the price, they are fairly smooth and hold their tension well. They have only been in service about a year so I can't tell you about longevity.

Here is a picture.

Cecil

Mike, they may not fit on some headstocks but the spacing on the original tuners is just at 1" post to post (same as my Taylor 12-string). According to the drawings, these tuners should do that easily.

Cecil, thanks, that's encouraging. I was hoping to get some opinions from folks with first-hand experience.

I haven't used those exact tuners, but I've used their 3-on-a-plate economy tuners and I haven't found anything wrong with them at all.

I've no experience with the covered version, but we've used StewMac's economy open gear tuners on all out student guitars... only 1 bad tuner in ~60 sets.

Well, I'm convinced they should work just fine so I'll go ahead and order them.

Thanks everybody!
