A and A+, Waddy.

My daughter's guitar has some pretty bad scratches in the FP'd top. She got it when she was 12. I'd like to pretty it up this summer and was wondering if it needs to be taken back to wood or if it can be filled somehow.

Plaster of Paris. Used in the manner of pore filling, like you would with Pumice. Little at a time, don't expect to fill in one go. It also depends on the depth and size of the indents - they may have to be steamed out.

I tried the plaster of paris thing on one place in my #2 guitar, and now I have a dark spot there. Didn't work as I expected. I'm sure I did it wrong, but it wasn't as easy as I thought it'd be. I would steam them out and touch up the FP. You can steam right through it sometimes, if it's a nice thin finish, which is what I prefer on my tops. You'll have to re-work the area, but it's not hard to get it back up to snuff.
