This board is dimensioned such that my initial thought was FINGERBOARD!!!!!!

But as I'm cleaning it up and seeing the grain orientation...I"m wondering about it now.

What do you think?

Actually Terry I don't feel too bad about it....I only paid 8 dollars for it. My thinking, like yours, was that it would be too unstable to use as fingerboard material....maybe inlay stuff?

I'll be really interested in responses - is grain orientation important in ebony for stability of a fingerboard?

I really like the look of it - if it's stable, I think I'd use it anyway - what about a zebrawood back and sides with it? Use it for headstock laminate as well?

I wouldn't worry about the grain orientation, just the cosmetics. I think if you did it right and made a feature of the wonky grain that's all bunched up at the bottom it would be beautiful.

Depending how the sides look, you could also bookmatch fingerboards from it. My favourite electric builder (sadly out of the game now) used a lot of bookmatched fingerboards to great effect.

I went ahead and ran it thru the saw....some pretty neat looking stuff. I think I'm going to let it sit in the wood room for a few months and see how much it moves around...then make a decision.

Wow - bookmatched fingerboards. It never occurred to me - that could be pretty cool. You could even do a centerstrip of something equally hard, but with a contrasting color.....

The Kasha/Shneider designed Gibson MK series from the '70 had a FB with ebony centre and EIR "sides", or the opposite, on some models.
