I'm working on my first rosette. Here is a rough idea of what it will look like taken from an old deco design. The blue is to be ablam or real abalone. I would like to make it first and then set it in the top as my top needs to dehumidify because of the weird weather we are having here in northern CA.

My questions are.

1 How thick should I make this rosette?
2 Should I glue it to a backing as I make it?
3 Should I just dry fit and flood with CA?
4 The black is going to be fiber, Can I just double or more to get the line thickness I want?

My plan is to make the main part and add the inner and outer lines during the install in top. Is this the best way to go about it?

Thanks,

Mike

AS thick as your pearl.

2 Should I glue it to a backing as I make it?
If your going to make it outside the top
YES

3 Should I just dry fit and flood with CA?
In the top or outside?

Yes.

Install the rose then cut your outside lines.
Unless they are very thin-then I'd install them when making the rose.

Nice looking design, but are you sure that you want to take the shell that close to the sound hole and then have only a bit of black fiber purfling between it and air?

It may be OK in the eyes of some but unless you have some kind of support underneath like a standard bound soundhole, I reckon you will have trouble on your hands. Also I will add that the shell is 'very' wide, and with shell, too much is very easy to achieve, and most soon tire of the look.

Cheers

Kim

Thank You for the input. Your right too much pearl. Less is more. I need to rework the design and make the whole thing a lighter looking. I will hold it back from the sound hole 1/4" or so.
