Hi again everyone -

I was gluing my purfling lines this morning on my rosette. I then went to work and when I came back I noticed that there is an area that the lines separated a little bit. I tried to stick an Exacto blade in there to see if I can clean it up and then put in more glue. But it seems like the dried glue is too strong and I can not push the lines together. I used Titebond for glue.

Any suggestions ? Should I route it out ? start over ? Would I better chiseling it out ? or is there an easier fix - maybe seom water and Titebond ?

Thanks again ! see picture

Since your just at the initial stages of the rosette, I'd rout it out and redo it. It'll probably be your fastest and best recovery.

John,

What Jim said.

I find I have fewer surprises with wood purfling in rosettes if I bend it beforehand on a hot pipe.

Here's a step-by-step I've found to work well for me when doing rosettes with a wood insert bordered by purfling:

Rout out the channel in the top, just under the desired outside dia.

Cut out the insert. Depending on the wood being used, I sometimes make it out of several pieces on the bandsaw, and essentially do an inlay, or one piece cut with a circle cutting jig. It doesn't need to be a perfect fit, but should be close.

Inlay the insert into the top.

After the glue dries, cut the channels for the purfling.

Bend the purfling, then inlay it.

After the glue is WELL dried, scrape level.

You have to be careful that the insert fits well enough that the channels you rout out for the purfling cut into both the top and the insert.

Good luck!

Pat
