I am looking for a B/S set of Wenge. I think LMI is the only one I have come across that has this. Does anyone have another source?
thanks
Richard

I have a few nice bits from Owl hardwood here in Illinois for headplates, &c &c. Perhaps you have something similar in your neck of the woods.

I have some here as well Richard that I could slice into sets. I could do one or two sets for $70 each.

Thanks

Shane

I prefer it off quarter. A friend had a quartered set that the pores were so big, he could see light through it. Should give a little better split resistance off quarter too.

Just look for folks being treated for splinters...there will be some wenge somewhere in the vicinity.

Right after I finished that guitar, a friend was playing it and got a splinter from the finger board. That was embarrassing.

Sides I have are quartered, backs are quarter to rift, slight chevron ot the grain lines .. nice looking.

if you are looking for boards, Exotic woods in Burlington Ontario Canada has lots, plenty wide, and quartered. they will resaw for you as well ....

Thanks for the input, I have found a local supplier I am going try. So it looks like I need something that is QTR or slightly off quarter for the gain?

Thanks
Richard

I heard that you would get splinters if you just looked at Wenge but that is completely incorrect and a gross exaggeration.
I found out you can get splinters from Wenge if you look at it wrong.

Wenge is every bit as bad as purpleheart for splinters, maybe even worse.

Wenge makes purple heart look like butter in comparison. Take old Doug fir framing lumber, the kind that has been baked in a attic for 50 years combine it with cedar and metal and you will come close to Wenge. Brazilian satin wood is pretty bad as well but Wenge is the worst I have ever experienced.
