Yeah, yeah I know, I know - it took me forever to get my dust collector hooked up but I wanted to do something a bit unconventional.

Instead of a lot of plumbing all over my shop I really don't mind unplugging a hose from one machine and plugging it into another machine. After all there is only one of me using one machine at a time..... :? :D

What held me up so very much is that I could not figure out a neat and tidy way to pass the pipe through my finished shop walls. I wanted it to look good and I also wanted to use quick connects and disconnects.

Rockler has a quick connect/disconnect system that was my answer and all I needed was a 4" metal heating duct coupler and this all worked out. Here is what I did - it took about an hour to complete:

First I cut 4.5" holes in my wall from my main shop into the saw room where the dust collector lives:

Note the insulation - my shop is a 400 square foot bubble in a very dry basement. I used vapor barriers and R-13 when I built my shop and it holds a steady 45ish% RH very well. This is one of the reasons why I wanted a tight install for the dust collector.

Next Rocklers 4" flanges where what I was looking for and when combined with a 4" metal coupler I was all set:

Again the idea is quick connects and I don't mind unplugging one tool and moving the hose:

My DC has another 4" port that I may at some point port through the wall too:

This is Rocklers quick connect fitting with handle. The mating couplers have been install on all of my tools that I plan on using the DC with:

So there it is and it works great. I do understand that I would have had better performance using a larger diameter pipe/hose and not using flex hose but this system works way better than the 134 CFM Festool vac that I did use for years....

Thanks again everyone for all of your very valued assistance with my questions. :)

Looks great Hesh. How good is the dust collection on the rigid sander? I am going to hook mine up soon.

Heck of a setup!

Looks good Hesh.
I really doubt that you have lost any performance at all by your choices.
You have ended up without any right angle bends, tees, valves, changes in ducting size etc and those are real flow killers.
You have just got a nice short hose with gradual curves and that is great.

Thanks guys! :)

Edward buddy the Rigid has pretty good dust collection once you use some tape to plug up excess holes. My experience with this machine has only to date been with a 134 cfm vac and that was good enough IMHO. So not bad which is not always the case with sanders.....

Thanks Jeff and that's good to know. I wanted a simple system but hoped that I did not sacrifice much power in the way that I did it.

John my friend well yeah - isn't your shop this clean????? :D

Steve good point - what tool are we buying next.... laughing6-hehe :D

Matthew bro my first shop was a bathroom with 4 square feet..... [xx(] :D Wood storage was in the shower stall and my compressor lived in a bathtub......

Looks good Hesh. I don't have a DC system(just a shop vac). I hear that they are very loud.
That's good having it in the other room connected through the wall. Nice job!

Hmmm, looks like there is a slight gap between the metal dryer duct and the plastic fittings. This might not be a problem, but I would be tempted to squirt some RTV between the pipes on both sides of the wall.

I don't know - I still have to catch up some, I plan to replace my 14" Grizzly bandsaw with a Rikon this summer then we can talk about it. ;)

Good looking system Hesh. I bet that will reduce some noise in the shop... have it running all the time even if tools are off. It appears to leave you a bit of extra space as well. I know dragging mine around the shop is frustrating at times.

I am having trouble understanding why the need for the dust collection.. isn't all your lumber the 'dust-free' hybrid? I never see dust on anything in your pics and there is no way your dust collection could get it all. idunno laughing6-hehe

Yeah, I'm the anti-Hesh. I'm not even allowed to go from the garage directly into the house. I have to go outside and shake off first.

Think you have problems - sometimes I have trouble finding my way out of the shop!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I have a mat just outside my shop. It says Welcome, but it's so I can wipe my feet before stepping into the carport or driveway.

Thanks everyone.

Barry thanks for that and I just finished using RTV as you recommended.

Prior to that I installed this:

I know that I said that I don't mind moving the hose from machine to machine but hey a guy HAS to have his remotes..... :D Besides it's was a 15' walk all the way into the other room so this will solve that problem... :? :D

Looks good Hesh. Like all your work, clean, neat and tidy [:Y:]
I concur with Barry about sealing between the plastic fitting and the metal pipe unless your connector plugs into the metal pipe there by making it superfluous.
