Wonder if anyone has used Minwax fast drying poly over zpoxy for necks? If you have wonder also what are the results and if you have had any down side? Thanks in advance for any comments.

Not doing too well here,wonder if anyone has used the minwax poly on necks regardless of the undercoat.

I've used the Minwax poli finish on a couple of banjo necks. In my opinion, it applies, dries, and hardens just like Tru-Oil (my favorite finish for both guitars and banjos).
Shouldn't be a problem over zpoxy. I've used Tru-Oil over a wide variety of finishes for repair work. And I've french polished over both Tru-Oil and Minwax poli a lot.

I use Minwax on all my guitars (over epoxy pore filling, only not Zpoxy). Done 35 so far.

What problem are you having with it?

Alaine: Use nitro as a final finish but want to use something else for necks. The last 6 I used polymerized tung oil over Zpoxy which finished very nicely but after a period of use the necks started to get rough and fuzzy. Other folks have had similar problems with True Oil over Zpoxy. Was hoping that Minwax poly over the Zpoxy would be the solution. Getting hard to find just plain old varnish. Thanks for the come back.

Most problems that you may encounter with polyurethane will be related to the poly not curing well or not sticking well, but not getting fuzzy over time.

Just as general info, poly doesn't cure well over most rosewoods, something that has to do with the oils in it that acts as an anti-catalyser. In those cases, I just seal with two coats of shellac. Also, polyurethane doesn't stick well to any kind of undercoat. I've never got it to stick to any lacquer, for example. Also, it doesn't stick well to wood that was pore filled with CA glue. But over epoxy, no problem.

Thanks Alaine,am going to use shellac over the Zpoxy before the poly Minwax. Did not do that with the polymerized tung oil and that may have been the problem. Have tried the Minwax poly over the zpoxy on scrap and it does seem to be OK so far. We'll give it a try and see what happens . Thanks again.

I'd suggest you do not use shellac in this case. Polyurethane sticks better to bare wood (even when pore filed with epoxy) than to shellac.
