I have a friend that recently replaced his Gibson Tuners on his SG custom to a set of 18 to 1 Grover closed back tuners. 5 of the 6 tuners work great but the tuner on the G string is quite a bit loser than the rest, which is causing it to detune when played or bent hard. Is there something that can be done to tighten the turn up a bit? If not, should I try placing it on a string that has slightly less tension up to tune, or just tell him to buy another set?

Is he not able to return them as faulty?

Taking the defective tuner back to get a warranty replacement would be my first inclination, if it's defective.
Do those tuners have a 'tension' adjustment screw at the end of the knob?

Not sure which Grover 18:1 closed back tuner that you are referring too but if they have a screw head showing on the knobs this screw controls the tension and it's not uncommon for them to work loose. If this is the problem just tightening the screw and trying the tuner until the resistance is not futile.... should fix it. On these models if you loosen the knob screws bending the strings will permit the tuner to turn and detune the instrument.

As others have said....Get it replaced by Grover. I believe they have a lifetime replacement on a defective part so no need to buy a new set if it is in fact defective.

Thanks for the info, I'll send it in for him. (By the way...The screw would not tighten any further...that was the first thing I checked, but thank you all)
