Hey y'all - any one used lacewood for a neck? I have a customer just itching to build a strat body and neck from lacewood. I know little of its properties - can anyone tell me much about it?

For what it's worth, I've used lacewood laminations in neckshafts, and I haven't been entirely happy with it.

My necks were 5 ply: mahogany/lacewood/mahogany/maple/mahogany/lacewood/mahogany.

They looked fantastic, but the lacewood was difficult to carve smoothly: I'd end up with a nice, smooth curve that turned wavy in the lacewood strips. I tend to think that if you had a solid lacewood neck, that problem could be even worse.

I'd still consider using lacewood in a neck, but I'd place it in the center lamination only.

I also used lacewood for a neck laminate.
The piece I had worked and felt pretty much like mahogany.
I agree with Kevin on the unevenness of the wood's density.
The wavy grain has hard and soft arias that can sand unevenly causing bumps.
I had to sand with a contoured block to get it to stay even.
I think it was worth the extra effort.

Mighty nice Wade.
It may not be relevant but
I used Lacewood for a fret board on my last build.
I'm not sure how well it's going to hold up! Time will tell.

Besides the "finishing" problems already mentioned...and I have had those issues just using lacewood as a binding...I would be highly suspect of it's strength to hold up to the continual string tension.
If you were to try an entire neck of it, I would certainly add carbon fiber reinforcement rods in the shaft under the fretboard, in addition to the adjustable truss rod...and run them up past the headstock angle cut and bury them under the headstock to reinforce that VERY critical area.

I would agree with Hank. Every one of those spots is a seriously weakened area. In binding, it wants to break at every little dot.
