Hi folks.I'm building no.2, an OM, spruce/EIR, and the back is 2.45 mm thick (0.96"). Box is closed up, and I'm wondering if this back thickness is a bit much. (Back bracing is 18 x 8 mm spruce, (0.75" x 0.30", thin parabolic in section)
The EIR is well quartered, good grade, rang like the proverbial bell as plates. I realise individual makers may use different thicknesses, but can you suggest what sort of thicknesses you might use?
The reason I'm asking is it seems to have a much tighter "tap tone" as a closed box, tapping both the front and the back, than no.3 (silkwood B&S, similar thickness) and could still thin it if I want too before finishing.

It should project well. Maybe Al will tell us about the coupling of the back and top resonances with thicker backs. My experience has been that a thicker backed guitar is less responsive for fingerstyle players but projects better for flatpicking performers. I like about .085 for most EIR.

.96" might be a little thick. You might try .096".
