Does the specie affect sound/tone?
Does it effect strength?

I agree with you Stan. I have used about everything you can for kerfing, all that does is allow a glue surface area . Braces, that is a different story.

I use spruce because it's light and I like the contrast against a usually dark back.

Kerfed lining is a subject that can elicit interesting comments. For me , I like reversed kerfs for the look and Spanish cedar for the scent. Nothing like that humidor scent and moths hate it and won't eat your guitar

I just used basswood kerfed linings for the first time and loved its working properties for the purpose.

Spanish cedar, as I understand it, is one of the woods that is likely to be subjected to tighter restrictions under CITES, possibly in the near future. Just something to bear in mind if the guitar is going to be traveling internationally. E.g. I'm making an instrument for a customer from Ireland right now. To save him future border hassles, there's no mahogany, no Spanish cedar, etc, anywhere on the instrument.
