I wonder if I need to reinforce my piece of .050 paua abalam with plastic for the purpose of cutting with a scroll saw. If so: what kind, how thick, & glue type?
Also what are the sources on the web for the best price of router cutters with a 1/4 " shank or should i get a dremel?

Hey Mike,

I would use veneer instead of plastic as a backer ...

as for bits, I get mine from a place in Scarborough .. have to find the catalog though for the name of it, havent been in over a year now - they still run about 20 bucks a piece for 1/8, 3/16 and 1/4 on 1/4 shank .. but they are better than Freuds from HD ...

Hide glue
Hardboard, wood, or MDf as backer
Precisebits with 1/4" collars on them

I'm with Bob on the glue and backer board. The glue will release in a pan of hot water.

Personally, I wouldn't use a scroll saw to do any inlay cutting. Even at very slow speeds on my super-duper Hawk saw, I find I don't have enough control over the cut and it wanders off-line fast, resulting in sloppy-looking work. I prefer to use a hand-powered jeweler's fret saw. With that, I have complete control over every single stroke and can stop in an instant to adjust direction/rotation of the work. YMMV.

With a fret saw, using a "bird mouth" table, you don't need to back 0.05" shell at all, it's perfectly strong enough all by itself.

I am realizing now how challenging this may be. It appears a small bit like .031 has a max DOC of only .012. For paua that is .050 that means 4 settings. And to top it off my logo is my initials MM with the width of the narrowest line is .055.
Am I completely out to lunch or is this even possible?
Can I route say .024 deep & just sand the paua down?
