I’m about to try hide glue for the first time. I’m using 192 gram granules from LMI. Mixed up a small batch earlier this week using a gram scale to get the 1:1.8 proportion recommended. Heated the mixture the next day to 140 degrees for about 20 minutes and stirred to ensure all of the hhg was completed dissolved. Then allowed it to cool and put it in the refrigerator to wait for the weekend.

Just pulled the glue jar out of the fridge. I stuck my fingernail into the surface of the glue expecting a hard glassy surface and instead found the consistency to be like very dense rubber – slightly giving and not glass-like at all. Is this normal? Should it have a hard glassy consistency coming out of the refrigerator?

thanks

Doug, that's normal.
A large mass of glue in a closed bottle can't loose it's moisture so it'll remain rubbery. At least that's why I think it remains rubbery.

Thanks Jim. It's always fun doing something for the first time. Full steam ahead.

Thanks for the confirmations Jim and Todd. Warmed both the bridge and the guitar top prior to applying the glue. Start to finish in 40 seconds. Good juicy squeeze-out all the way around. I think my first hhg bridge glue is a go.

Hide glue's awesome, don't be intimidated, its just not that hard. Just remember to add a little water if its been cookin' in the pot all day, the water evaporates.

Actually it is Jello. Just not the name brand, and probably wouldn't taste very good to you, but your dog would like it just fine, and it wouldn't hurt him/her at all.
