For anyone interested, I see where Lowe's has discontinued selling Delta products and Home Depot has just started selling them. As a result, Lowes is offering some deals to clear out what's left of their Delta stock.

Near me is a Lowes with a floor standing Delta 16.5" Laser Drill Press Model # 17-950L, 1/2HP (on small side?) with large forward and side tilting cast iron table, looks stout and weighs 194#. Regular $435 incl. tax and now for $325 incl tax. While the price they presently show on the machine is not that attractive, they will take offers. Here it is: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1 ... ogId=10053

I assume that this would make a decent drill press for guitar building, especially at this price point. What is your experience and opinion?

Thanks,
Ed

I don't use my drill press for much but drilling holes. I don't see why this one would not work. I know some builders use their drill presses for a lot of shaping of parts so hopefully someone who does this will chime in.

For the money, its a very good drill press. You get lasers and a light. The only thing to check is the bearing runout. You must move belts to change speed, but I suspect most drill at the same speed anyways. I have a friend who built an airplane with it. Can't be all that bad!
