I bought a beater Ibanez Performance acoustic guitar (1999) to practice repairs on and was wondering if anyone knew how these necks were attached?

Thanks,
Devin

hows the goin devin tis a good way to get experience with the ply guitars
theirs not too many people bothered with them
i would say at around its price range $175 that its a butt dowel
joint normally about 5 in there
go to frank fords site FRETS.COM scroll down to
spanish heel neck reset an impossible job?
he uses a bone saw and fornester bit
i use a hairdryer and flat boring bit filed backwards for this operation
feel free to ask any questions
as theres a few tips that isnt mentioned
only a little amount of knowledge can be a dangerous thing
good luck ......

Tomas,
Thanks for the reply. I love Frank Fords site, very informative. That was an interesting way to solve the problem at hand.

Tomas,
I found a link showing some pictures of the setup you mention in your post. Helps me to visualize.

you dont have to take the whole fb off
what i did was make a dovetail dectector out of some very thin stainless steel
just a piece about 6 inch long and 1/2 cm wide, kink it sharply at 90
and grind it about 1 mm high tapering down to the kink

work it side to side to where the pocket should be
youll definatly feel it if its a standard dovetail
if you find the pocket youll be able to slide across the pocket
sometimes theres two lats glued in that goes each side of the truss rod
attaching the neck to body and your detector might get stuck

the things i use for the job
leather with f/b extension cut out ,iron ,thin flat paint scraper, very thin saw blade ,hairdryer ,tissue, thin tape and one of my girlfrends hairdressing blades (this i found to be the thinnest and its about 4cm long )
and sandpaper with a very sharp chisel (i love to use the stu-mac micro chisels)because its so easy to blow the heel
a flat wood cutting bit with the shaft filed to a sharp 90 and sharpened the same so it works in reverse

you will get a much better score into the finish (believe it or not this isint a job for the scalpal )
if you set the blade cutting into the body by pressing the blade into the contour of the heel
,with a strip of tape around the heel(keep replacing it )

another thing before marking the heel through the bolt holes
leave a gap in between the fb and the top ,make a loose fitting shim if the gaps bad
otherwise youll have a neck to body hump
hope this helps give me a shout if you need me to explain better
good luck

ps i forgot to mention if youve got a guitar with solid sides i would be very wary
about wobbleing the neck /pulling the neck exc to much while heating the heel with the hairdryer
just for the record the last guitar i worked on had glued in dowels with with epoxy
took a bit more than half an hour

I've done a couple of these, and find that stringing them up really high, helps break the "joint", when I'm worrying the neck back & forth. I used a heatgun.

@wolfsearcher:
I'm not sure I have a clear picture of how your using the detector. Are you coming in under the fb extension or from the side of the neck to feel for the pocket?

thanks,
Devin

it might be a bit less than 1 mm of a catch on it
it depends on how much the neck angle is off
and how much the fretboard extension lifts
youd definatly feel if its there

just work it side to side pushing over and back while upwards twords the headstock
if you went from the side you could crack the laquer on the binding

there could be a better shape for the detector as it does scrape the top a bit under the f/b
it does take a push
Im waiting to fall across the perfect thing for this one day
or get better metal for this
i suspect a cable tie catch shape would work well

The neck joint ended up being a dovetail joint.
