Shane is a really great guy and has basically said all there is to say. What stuck with me was:

Quote:
I would also be delighted to see some other creative ideas to make this family have the kind of Christmas we should all have!

I don't know John Mayes personally, but his DVDs really helped me to become a better builder (at least that's my opinion ;) ). So here's a chance to give a little bit back. Unfortunately I don't have the seemingly unlimited wood supply that Shane has, but I have this spalted maple burl drop top that has been sitting on my shelf for a while. I think it will make a really stunning guitar.

Two pieces, not yet jointed, each piece measures 21" x 7 1/4" x 3/8". I guess you'd lose about 1/4" total when jointing.
Two corners are soft and very porous(marked in the 1st picture), as is a small spot on the edge to be jointed (also marked in the 1st picture).

The small spot possibly ends up in a pickup cavity or under the fretboard. The soft corners shouldn't be a problem for Telecaster or Les Paul style bodys, you may have to stabilize one of the corners if you plan on a Strat style body

The second picture is enhanced in Photoshop to show the figure a bit more. This is not a natural representation of the wood under finish (although I don't think it's too far off).

So lets get the bidding started, highest bidder gets it. Like Shane's auction, it ends noon EST next Wednesday. I will pm the winner and ask him to pay the funds directly to John's paypal account and once I have confirmation of that payment being made, I will ship the drop top!

Maybe we can get a few more of these auctions going!

Merry Christmas to you all,
Christian

Hey, we don't care if you guys run these, but if you do, please loop Lance or I in on these so we can make them sticky etc.

Just let us know before you post them.

Heck, this is going to look good on my son's first les paul-like guitar. Still, not sure why the mods broke the moorings. PS: where do I find good plans for a LP model?
