I decided I didn't like the rope rosette on my new 6 and 12 strings so I redid the rosettes and then rebound them. Here's the fix...
Measure your soundhole with a dial caliper. Measure in several places to be sure. We are going to make a plug that fits snugly and has the pin exactly centered. Using a chunk of thick spruce, set the router for 1/2 the thickness and run it out 3/16" from your target diameter.

Rout inward till you hit your target diameter...

Run your router back out and cut through the spruce. Then glue a block on the inside for pin support...

Plug up your soundhole and get to work...

Install your new rosette. I elected to yank the teflon right away and fill with slightly tapered Coco to push the purflin out snug...

Sand it off and you are done...

Haans, the old one looked fine but the new one looks even better. By the way, how do you like the stew mac rosette cutter with the dremel? Its what I have but have not tried it yet.

Marvelous. Thank you, Haans!

Thanks Haans. I wondered how one might redo a rosette after the soundhole was cut.

Thanks guys! It's very easy to make, quick (took me about 5 minutes), and as accurate as you measured the hole. I found that it cut the trim out and nothing else. Of course a good snug fit is essential.
Edward, The Stew-Mac jig itself is as good as any router jig. You have to seal the wood well to get a good cut, you should use very sharp downcut bits and don't rush. Make sure the pin is vertical, supported by a board underneath and a tight fit. Also make sure your Dremel is good...some of my old ones have the wobblies.

Yes, Edward, lacquer works along with shellac or spirit varnish. I rub a couple of coats in with a rag. Most important is to wait till it's completely dry and hard. Heat gun judiciously used helps if you are in a hurry.
As Todd says, it should work with any router rosette setup.

Mike, I was kinda unclear, but I'd use lacquer with lacquer, and shellac or spirit with varnish. Not a good idea to mix finishes normally.
