I know a guy who has an abundance of brazilian rosewood and I w as just wondering what I should be looking for in the wood ( B&S set) and how much a set generally goes for. It seems he is asking a bit much for a set

thanks

Decent BRW should go for $600 and up. Good stuff costs around $800 to $1000 and the real nice stuff could go from $1300 to $2000. It kinda depends on color and grain.

Brazilian is a strange world these days. Sets (quasi-legal) go on eBay for around $200 and, as mentioned, some go locally from various stashes for $500 on up. A bunch of Brazilian sold here in my area for $50 a board foot and sounded like it was going to make a lot of guitars, but a lot of the wood turned out to not be useful for instruments. This may be the situation your friend is in. As a broke but interested viewer on the scene, it seems that the key price driver is the quality of the wood. If it is very dark, laced with spider webbing and cut on the quarter, then you are looking at over $500 per set material. The problem is that most of this stuff was used up by the mid 60's so it is rare.

I hope your friend is interested in offering a few sets to the OLF crowd, I am sure many of us would be interested.

My advise is to steer away from sets sold on Ebay. Not only are most sets shipped illegally from Brazil, majority are of sub-par quality. I have seen several that did not look like the pictures, were not properly cut and were from green and young trees. Not only are folks promoting illegal harvest of young trees they are also buying wood that should not be used on an instrument.

When you find a bunch of dark, spiderwebbed, quartersawn brazilian for $500, let me know. I'll buy as much of it as you have.

Filippo

I'll pay $600 ;)
