Are the side braces that Benedetto uses really necessary? I'm gluing in the linings of my archtop and was wondering how beneficial they are. I don't remeber seeing them in any archtop I've owned.

Some people use them and some don't Jason. Some use fabric. They are mainly to stop a crack from traveling all the way around the side of an instrument if you're unfortunate enough to drop it or whack it somehow. They also help to stiffen the sides somewhat if that's what you're after.
