Hello, Friends.
I'm curious to know how many of you would be interested in a forum section for discussion of experimental methods, materials, designs, and so forth. I am a big fan of experimentation, and I always enjoy reading (and frequently learning) from these discussions. Judging from the number of responses I see to experimental postings (many running into several pages), there are lots of people here who enjoy these topics as much as I do. It would be very nice to be able to locate these discussions with a single click, rather than sorting through several screens of general topics in order to find and follow them each day. I think a dedicated section might also benefit those experimenters who are timid about posting their concepts in the general discussion area. I firmly believe those folks are out there lurking, but have just been shy about posting. I have no idea how much support we'd need to show in order to persuade Lance to launch a new section, but I believe he'll do it if there's enough support. (Lance, what say you?) So.....would you readers who are interested please chime in and let us know your thoughts about this proposal?
Many thanks to all.
Patrick

Initially this sounds like a good idea, however, If I had a question about an experimental procedure, I would want the folks who have the answers be able to see the post and if it’s not on the “guitar builders” forum, I’d think some would miss it.
I, for one, don’t always think to look at the sub-forums, even though I do have an interest.
Besides, the experimental stuff is what helps to give the main, guitar builder’s forum some spice.

I agree with Wade & MRS. In fact, I think that this sub-forum should be general luthiery rather than the "Guitar Building Forum".

I'm all for discussing experimental building and I'd like to see more of it here.

I'm more interested in answers to "why" questions than I am in "how" questions.

As to whether it would be best for this topic to have its own forum I don't know -
being a new member.

.
So the Padma receives an e-mail from Peter (cphanna) with a link to this thread and a suggestion me check it out.

Hmmm me thinks...must be sumptin up for him to e-mail me.
And surprise surprise...what a wonderfull suggestion.

Dudes like me wood fits right in like a shoe.

Weather it be called Experimental, General Lutherie, Alternative, or R&D Builds, it don't really matter.
Just magine dudes, a sub form to express, show and tell, and discuss
our alternative ideas and approaches to building and materials.
A place to really get inspired with new and different ideas.

Maybe your right Todd, maybe that Bondo thread brought the "need" for such an sub forum to the forfront. As such, thats exactly why I will get behind this new sub forum, hopeing it will be ..."a little more tolerant" - you know for guys like me who don't use calipers. laughing6-hehe

SO YES!...

the Padma is in full support, and I encourage the membership of OFL to support it as well.

Thank you Peter for enticing me out of my self inflicted sabatical with this concept.

Now me gonna go back in to me retreat and contemplate other things that need contemplation. See you all in a week or so.

blessing
the
Padma

We are open to new Discussion Topics if they will be used. However, I am not sure if there is enough wide spread interest to support something like that.

However, we did get a suggustion the other day to start a Voicing discussion to have an ongoing discussion of methodology and procedures for voicing guitars. I thought that was an idea that there would be lasting interest in.

Is there a way to keep posts sticky (at the top) say like the voicing/experimentation so that they're in the samew forum just always at the top so they don't drop out of peoples view and just change colour when updated?

I agree with Fillipo. I like all the different ideas and non-traditional builds even though I am more interested in the traditional, for now.

There are sub-forums? Who knew!? idunno

Kidding aside, I don't like the idea of separating ANYTHING from the main forum. In fact, I'd go as far as to suggest we shut down the reso. kit builders, etc. sub-forums and bring them all back under the main big all-encompasing forum. If you're not interested in a topic, don't read the thread (e.g. I haven't looked at the bondo thread at all). It's really not that hard to use the search function to find threads that have dropped off the first few pages.

Cheers,
Dave F.

This in haste from my iTouch
As someone who isn't afraid to paint outside the lines from time to time I'll repeat the venerable saying "you've got to know the rules before you can break them"
My advice to those who are feeling rambunctious is do your homework (Klein,Kasha, etc) first, then build a dozen or so to get your chops, and only then go ahead and let 'er rip.

I love thinking outside the box.

I love asking folks what's likely to happen if I do something bizzarre, then trying it anyway.

personally I'd rather keep the bizzarre in the community rather than have to traipse off to Coney Island to see the freak show!!

Absolutely! I think any frequent user should consider having this as their desktop link to the OLF!...great to see what "tutorial" has shown up, what CNC rig or "off topic" dilema (iphones!?) has appeared. (My sense is that actually a lot of good input is missed because many just focus on the "guitar building" forum, not even realising that a topic of interest has been posted on another forum.)

Hi, again, All. These are all good points, and the idea might indeed be more trouble than it's worth. I was thinking more of my reading habits when I'm browsing over at mimf.com. I do check several sections there almost each day, but when I'm curious about a particular area of building, I know right where to go to find it. I'm sure many of you have seen that site and probably use it very frequently, so those who do will know what I mean. I can go right to archtops, flat tops, solid body, electronics, finishes, materials, etc. etc. etc., and I find that very handy. I do find lots of helpful stuff here at olf, too, and I visit and contribute frequently. I was just thinking along those lines of organization. I was in favor of someone's proposal for an archtop section here for the same reason. Yes, I have been interested in Padma's building threads, but missed most of the 'bondo' thread until it was called to my attention. It's not the way I build things, but I enjoy reading about it and I like most of the reactions his stuff draws from other readers. Bob, thanks for directing me to the eluthery site. I will definitely check that out, too. Okay, thanks again to everyone for answering.
