Hi Guys,

I am finding that when I use my Gobar deck to glue bracing, I get a lot of glue squeze out that is hard to clean or wipe off when wet. Do you guys have any suggustions?

Bascially, the braces themselves are not too big, and to protect them from the fiberglass rods I use in the Gobar deck, I have rubber caps, plus I put a small piece of wood on top of the brace (broken paintsticks). I find that is it very difficult to wipe away the excess glue prior to drying.

Obvioulsy I could use less glue, but didn't know if there were any tricks I am not thinking of.

Are you waiting too long to wipe away the glue? Oh, and what glue you talking about?

A slightly damp rag and a small scrap of spruce work for me on both Titebond and HHG.

I leave enough wood in the braces so the small dents created by the gobars are removed when top tuning. With Titebond let the glue set up a little until it gets a little rubber like and it scrapes of easily, when using hide glue I use a rag and dip it in the hot water in the glue pot for clean up.

I use disposable straight edge razor blades for glue cleanup. In fact, razor blades might just be one of the most used items in my shop. They work incredibly well for light scraping purposes and have a myriad of other uses.

A toothbrush that is left in the hot water of the glue pot is a good way to scrub the residue of HHG after the sharp stick, then wipe up with paper towel. Learned it here.

I just glued my top braces on with HHG and used the stick method for the first time. Actually a wedge that was a cut off from pre-tapering the X brace. It worked like a charm.

I use what I call laddering , I span braces with a piece of wood about 1/2 inch square and use them to take the brunt of the go bars. I can add more gobars and clamp up smaller braces without the gobars popping.
after about 10 minutes I scrape out the glue when it gets boogerized and not so runny.

A plastic straw works well for Titebond, not so much for HHG. It conforms to the intersection perfectly, and the glue just slides into the straw with no further cleanup required.
