HELP US FIGURE OUT WHAT PLAN TO OFFER NEXT



We are looking at producing a new guitar plan. We have had the OLF SJ, MJ, and OM for quite some time,
and we would like to introduce a new plan but we would like your opinions in helping us figure out what to offer next.

The prerequisites are:



· It has to be a plan that is not currently offered commercially

· It should have wide appeal

· It should be acoustic.



A couple obvious choices are a steel string baritone, and a version of a Martin 00 size guitar.
Please share your thoughts with us.
What would you suggest, and what would you buy if it was commercially available

How about an 00, or an 000? Good small body plans seem harder to find.

I voted for a Barritone because there were several members really wanting me to draw one up when I got the time.

I voted Baritone, because it's something really different. There are Gibson L-00 plans out there as well as Martin OM, Parlor, 000,... so it seems to me that the need for the Martin 00 is not that big...

Another thought I had was a Gibson J-185 plan. LMI might be interested in that as well. LMI offers side bending service for the J-185, but (to my knowledge) there doesn't exist a J-185 plan.

How about a Nic Lucus like Rod's new one?

I would love to see:
- Stella Grand Concert (Oscar Schmidt) Ladder braced guitar (also great for bottleneck guitar!)
- Gibson Nick Lucas

I voted baritone but my second choice would be the Nick Lucas

I vote dreadnought. Here is a plan I'd like to see.

Baritone - my 2nd choice would be an acoustic bass guitar (just to complete the thought).

I'd second the J185 if the shape and size are not close to one of the other plans.That aside ,how about a 12 fret slope shoulder dread. Don't think there is a plan for that one.

Doesn't GAL have a Nick Lucas? Or do they just have the L-00?

They have the L-00. I do not want to speak for others, but I was referring to the early Nick lucas body shape - not the deep L-00.

Lance & Brock...I'd like to suggest that whatever plans are offered in the future that they be based on measurements from actual models or factory drawings rather than someone's interpretation of a particular model. That way, each builder alone can decide how he might want to deviate from the original. We've all seen the problems that arise with heavy bracing from currently available Martin interpretations as well as having to procure custom cases for what could have otherwise been a much less expensive standard case. If you're going to sell these it just makes sense to have a drawing based on thousands of proven real life test cases.

I vote for a 12-fret Gibson slope-shouldered dread ala the Roy Smeck model. What body size are you considering for the baritone and what version of the Martin 00 are you thinking of - the 12 or 14 fret? I would buy any of these - I am a whore for instrument plans - I own about 40+ plans. I just love em'.

J-185.

Love the shape, played a couple good ones. The SJ is next on my list of plans to buy/build, but the 185 might change my mind.

i voted baritone just because i have yet to run across some plans for one.

Yes, the GAL offers a plan drawn up by Ted Davis of the all mahogany H braced L-O which is the same shape as the early Nick Lucas Special. Here's the link: http://www.luth.org/plans/pl06.jpg

I voted for 00. I agree with a few others here with regard to designing plans as accurate as possible to a Martin spec 00 (or whatever you pick). That way I have plans true to the original that I can refer to and tweak to my heart's content.

LiquidGabe, I too love the J-185. I recently built an OLF SJ that turned out beautifully and is a fine playing guitar, but it isn't a J-185. I am just getting underway on a J-185, but with a long scale neck rather than the Gibson short scale.

I'm currently muddling through a Baritone build on a J-185 body! (With a TON of help from OLF members!)

Good baritone plans are needed as there are none available...

I voted for the baritone but think that a baritone with a J-185 shape would be the best option. Good luck Ray with the build, hope you post some pictures when its done !
