1. When rubbing out a finish to satin (i used synthetic steel wool 000 and0000 w/wool lube), do you use buffing compound? I used Renaissance Wax and there is a hazy film left.

2. Can you spray an aerosol lacquer over truoil (like behlen's stringed instrument lacquer)?

3. (I guess I have 3 ??) If no to #2 then Can I apply more truoil on top of the renaissance wax?

To question # 1. Get a soft rag/cloth and buff after the wax. It should remove the wax and produce a bit of a semi gloss finish. That's what this is. I like to use steel wool and paste wax for a softer sheen on lacquer. No need for buffing compounds.



Don't know about the others as I've not used Tru Oil before.

1. Depending on the grit you've used, most likely your steel wool is a different abrasive gradation than your rubbing compound. I don't know why someone would want to mix them.

2. I've never used Truoil but if it dries hard and you let it fully cure out, you probably can although I would recommend abrading the surface first with 600 gr to ensure a mechanical bond. I would check with the TruOil people first, though.

3. You really shouldn't apply anything on top of wax other than more wax. I'm sorry for contradicting the previous poster but buffing does not remove all the wax. You'll need to completely strip it off first with mineral spirits.

Yes you can spray lacquer over Tru Oil but - yes - you need to scuff a bit first. Tru Oil is more like a varnish than a real oil finish.

Lacquer thinner will make any oil varnish curl and lift. You could spray Tru-oil, or Rockhard on top of lacquer, but not the opposite. A coat of shellac over the Tru-oil may block the lacquer, but I would do a couple of tests before touching the guitar.
Wax can be removed by carefully wiping with naphtha, and a little scuff should allow other coats to adhere.
