I am building a dobro like guitar from a kit which uses birch plywood. I want to finish it solid black. I have some experience with spraying clear laquer but none with colors. My main concern is how to deal with keeping the color off the binding .

If you are using plastic binding, you can spray over the binding and then scrape ( with a razor blade) clean, or you can mask off with good quality masking tape.If you are using wooden binding I'd suggest masking; Either way, you'll probably want to spray clear coats over the color coats after you remove the overspray or the tape.
regards,
jack
