I just received this email (7/31 12:19 EST) about the books:

"John

The books just arrived here yesterday after clearing customs. We are in the process of repackaging them, having Ervin sign them, and shipping them out. The books should go out in the next few days. You should have the books in your hands shortly. Thank you for your patience, and for your continued support.

Respectfully,

Jason Kostal"

I'm sure everyone who ordered these will be receiving an email, but wanted to post the good news anyway. :D

I recieved an email answer back today:

Hi, Chris:

The books finally arrived day before yesterday. We now have a storage unit with hundreds of boxes of books in it: more than six tons of books. Oh, we are tired from moving these from the truck to the third floor of the storage facility!

We'll be sending these out as quickly as we can. Timing is not the best: we're all scrambling around to get ready for the Healdsburg show two weekends from now. There is simply a lot of last-minute stuff to do. We'll do the best we can, and hope that people will find that the wait will have been worth it.

Cheers, Ervin S.

My check cleared on 5/27/09 but I've heard nothing at all from Ervin ever since...no group email, nothing!
I'm sure I put my email ID on the enclosed letter. Anyone have the list of lucky first batch recipients?

Dave F.

On 5/20 there was an email list of those who order to that date. I didn't see your nane on it but maybe that's before you ordered it.
I'm hoping I get mine first since I was the first one to buy them.

So here is the one he sent out yesterday;

"Hello:

I'm sending this out to a long email list, and you may or may not be one of the people who ordered my books. My apologies for any confusion.

My books finally arrived at the Port of Oakland three days ago. I spent a day transporting six-plus tons of boxes from the customs warehouse to a rented storage facility. I'd thought to have my books much sooner but shipping, etc. took several weeks longer than I'd anticipated for a variety unavoidable reasons; I can truly say that I've learned something at every step of the way. But I am now, finally, in a position to start mailing books out.

The timing is tricky, because I'm also gearing up for the Healdsburg Guitar Festival, for which I'm leaving in a week and a half. I've got plenty to do in getting ready for that show, but I will start to mail books out this week nonetheless. Those books that I'm unable to mail out before the Healdsburg show will go out as soon as I return from it.

At this point, it would be easiest to just slap a shipping label on each set of books and send them out. But as it is, I need to sign a lot of the books. So I need to unpack boxes, remove the shrink-wrap from the books, sign them and repack them before the shipping labels can go on. So this will be laborious and will require some time.

On the plus side, I've ordered special shipping cartons to be made for the books to be sent off in. They are custom-made for these specific book sets. They are designed to include padding so that the books are protected during shipping: otherwise there's a chance that some of them would arrive at their destinations with dented corners or various other potential kinds of damage. The books should arrive in perfect condition.

I apologize for such delays, but I'm unable to do any better.

I hope to see as many of you as I can at the upcoming Healdsburg show.

If you wish to be taken off my email list, let me know.

Sincerely, Ervin S."

The long and short of it is they will be a while yet. I have to say that packaging and shipping things seems like it will go a lot faster than it actually does, especially when you have a lot of other things to do. So it may be a bit before he gets these all out. I am sure that we will hear on this board when they start to arrive in peoples hands and at that time it might be appropriate to give him a nudge if yours hasn't shown up.

Shane

After some of you have red Ervin's books I would like to know if they will really help you build a better sounding guitar. Ervin has a big problem of being overly verbose, though he does seem to be a very nice man and out standand builder. I've talked to him since nine years ago and kind of stopped because he tried to psychoanalyse me over the net when I did not ask for it. I hope he has never done this to anyone here.
There was no reason for him to have done what he did and we were talking about guitar building when out of the blue out came the psychology crap.
I have purchased a couple different builders books and the first helped some but you had to read so much just to find a small bit of information, I got real tired of that. I was in college long enough to get two degrees. I know how to do research but I'd rather have the information right in front of me in at least a paraphraph.

If any of you are going to Healdsburg, Ervin will have books there. I e-mailed him and asked if he would bring my books to the show. He said he would gladly do that, so I will pick up my set there. Just a thought for some of you.

I kinda got the impression, that, if you paid for a signed set, which I did, you probably aren't going to see them till after Healdsburg!

You have to know Ervin. He is not someone who approaches things in a straight line. Personally, I have found his information and continued guidance to be invaluable in my building.

I think if you just "go along with the ride" and let him weave his story his way you will find that you will get a lot out of it. He has a lot to offer.

Could you expand a bit on that as to how? I've read some of his articals and watched the videos and I'm sure I'll get much from the books as I like the way he explains things.

I had a little addition on the bottom of the email which explains another delay

Quote:

I'd thought to have my books much sooner but shipping, etc. took several weeks longer than I'd anticipated for a variety unavoidable reasons; I can truly say that I've learned something at every step of the way. They are designed to include padding so that the books are protected during shipping: otherwise there's a chance20that some of them would arrive at their destinations with dented corners or various other potential kinds of damage. The books should arrive in perfect condition.

One humorous dimension of how long this all took is that my books were in the customs warehouse for about a week. I was informed me that, being a first-time shipper and being off the official radar for that reason, my shipment would be subject to ‘special inspection’. When I asked what that was he told me that this is when they bring the drug-sniffing dogs in and open the shipment up and check it thorougly to see whether any contraband is coming in. Wow. And, indeed, the customs people had opened up an awful lot of the boxes the books came in, and then taped them back up. They are a THOROUGH bunch, they are. But it obviously extended the time all this took.

Now that they know I’m simply a guitar nerd, and therefore harmless, I can bring the drugs in next time.

Just kidding.

I apologize for such delays, but I'm unable to do any better.

I hope to see as many of you as I can at the upcoming Healdsburg show.

Sincerely, Ervin S.
