In the thread that Tom West started on Waverlies vs Grovers the discussion lead to include Gotohs and some people wanted to know the difference between the 700 series and 510 series Gotoh open back tuners. So I asked my distributor to request an answer from Gotoh in Japan what the difference was. The main difference is that the 510's have a nylon post collar that extends off the underside of the tuner plate (up into the post hole in the headstock) that is the same size as the bushing. This dramatically stiffens the post and reduces torque related issues. Most closed tuners have the case extend up into the headstock but most open back tuners have nothing. Also, you can get the Height adjustable post option (rarely requested by acoustic makers) on the 510's and not on the 700's.

Hope this helps!

Thanks

Shane
