I'm thinking of doing a bolt-on neck on an SJ that I'm building. The problem is that I've already built the body and did not pre-drill or countersink the heel block. I don't have any problem with drilling the bolt holes, but would like any advice on countersinking the block for the washers & nuts. Thanks in advance.

Aircraft tool suppliers carry "reverse spotfacers"

Do a search for "spotfacer" and you'll find the reverse ones. Get a shaft the same diameter as your hole and a spotfacer the diameter of your washers. They are good for putting an end jack in a guitar with a thick tailblock too.

Why do you want to countersink? Here we just use hardware from Lee Valley,flatheaded bolts with about a 5/8" round head made to be tightened by an allen key. They have a bronze color to them and I think look classy.Also gives folks in the future a heads up to how the neck comes off.

Have reread your post and now I gather you are using lag bolts....????? Think that most folks use inserts or barrel nuts with headed bolts...?

He's likely using hanger bolts. The type with one end with wood threads and the other with UNC threads.

Frank Ford talks you through he uses a bit and reverses the cut on it
i did something simmilar but instead of using the bit he used im using a
a normal contersink bit (sorry dont know the name of it )

but its the flat ones with the spear head shape on the top
i basically squared off the bottom the same way as the other side
cut into the taper with a rough bastard file till its the same radius as the bit
duplicate the cut on the new cutting side and i always make sure its sharp

Yes, Darrel I'm planning on using hanger bolts, and, Terence, the reverse spotfacer is exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks all for your suggestions.
