- I've heard and played Sitka-topped classicals with spine-tingling basses and smooth lower midrange (thinking of Gilbert here)
and with a musically effective upper register, but not one with the trebles that are beautiful,
heartrending (getting effusive here; oh well). Anyone heard a Sitka topped classical that
had a really beautiful upper range? (yes, I realize wood varies by the piece, but Sitka
is imo distinct from the others to a significant degree.)

Carey I can tell you I'm really pleased with the sound of this Sitka spruce top. I have read that bearclaw tends to be a better grade of wood, but I'm not certain that it makes a big difference in sound over plain sitka.

Ricardo- That's good to hear, because most of my (small) stock is Sitka. :)

One of the best-sounding Sitka topped nylon-strings I've heard was, of all
things, a Martin 00-28G. Bewitching in the low and mid-range, but it pooped
out big-time on the first string.. big ebony bridge though, and massive bracing.
Interesting guitar, but frustrating to play, overall.

I like it better than englemann probably because most of my stock is sitka, too! I have made sitka classicals that I really like. It can be made into an alluring-sounding guitar but probably not the one with the most rich harmonics. It takes longer than englemann to break in. Here is a clip of my #27, recorded when it was new:

Cavatina sounds so easy, but it is SO hard to play! How has the guitar matured over the years?

I've seen a photo of the Martin classical bracing. Massive would be the word!
