I'm doing a sunburst on my !st guitar and I was replacing the sound hole cover because the balloon that held it in place had lost to much air. When I opened it up and looked inside the dye stains had come through in quite a few spots. I had stained with Colortone cherry red and yellow then sealed with Target wb shelac and toned the rest of the sunburst with Target EM6000. It really looks like bad inside the guitar. Anyone ever had stain go all the way through a guitar before and any suggestions on how to make it look better. The top is Bearclaw Stika and the B&S are flamed maple. Good thing I'm not saleing this first one. I'm sure I didn't thin it to much, if anything it's on the thick side. [uncle]

John, can't help you much but considering it's almost impossible to make coloured veneers (.020") without industrial strength heat/pressure, I'm having a hard time understanding how it could permiate a .100" or whatever guitar plate without something else going on. Hairline cracks maybe? Shellac one side of curly veneer & it will come through some of the figure, but this is (presumeably) 5X thicker!
(Maybe reach through soundhole with a tiny scraper & scratch some of the red to confirm it's coming through the back & not dripping through the soundhole)

Its not comming through the sound hole. Its in different spots all the way down to the lower bout.I used butyl cellusolve to retard the alc stain so I could blend the colors better but that didn't work so well. I then did the rest of the sunburst with toned lacquer. I then started clear coating but didn't finish all the coats for a couple of weeks. When I started back working on it I noticed the hole cover was loose so I took it and the balloon out meaning to replace the balloon with a new one with more air. Thats when I saw the stains comming through. All I can figure is BC didn't let it dry completly and with the outside sealed and the warmer, more humid air in my garage and the soundhole covered it set up some kind of suctionto make it leech all the way through. I need to climate control my shop better because the problem I'm having now is the clearcoat is blushing everywhere on the top except where the braces are. It must be some kind of temp difference between the thin top and thicker brace areas. I know I didn't sand too thin.Anyone had that happen? The seeing where braces are I mean.
