I have some binding that has a b/w/b purfling already glued on.

Is there a way to use this and be able to still get the mitered corners I want at my butt wedge? It seems a little hard to separate the purf from the binding.

I do it that way all the time .. sharp chisel .... I cut the mitre thru the purf lines first, a bit back form the final spot, to check the cut and angle .. then from a distance back, peel the purf away from the binding. You might have to shave it some to get it off.

That's how I do it.

The REAL trick is getting it glued on right. I use fish glue to put on the binding these days, and wrap it with a 'rubber rope' ( a long strip cut from a truck inner tube) to get things nice and tight. When I fit the bindings I start from the waist, and tape them down with blue painter's tape. I trim the ends and miters at that point.

When I'm ready to actually glue the bindings on, I remove most of the blue tape, except for one at the bottom of each binding strip, and two on the upper bout. Then I start by removing one of the lower end tapes, spread the glue up to about the wide point of the hips, and tape the binding down with fiberglass reinforced packing tape. At this point you can push that lower end in and make sure you got the miter tight. When all four bindings are down, I wrap the thing with the rubber rope and leave it overnight.

This way, if there are any gaps they will be at the upper end, where they aren't such a prooblem. Once in a while, if things didn't get taped really tightly the first time, the bindings will be a bit long, and you need to trim the upper end with a sharp chisel.

As usual, this is not a perfect way to do it. It has the advantage of making it easy to bend the side lines and glue them in, and the disadvantage of making it hard to get the miters really tight.
