Other than using an epoxy what might be a good filler for oak? I was wondering if the egg white/sanding slurry method might be good.

I prefer using a paste wood filler like behlen pore-o-pac. I thought of maybe trying something like the epoxy filling but i have seen many who have had problems. So i figured since i have great results with the paste filler why change it. There are other that make paste fillers besides behlen, like bartley and macfaddens. It's great for oak, walnut and mohogany woods. I use the solvent based filler but they also have waterbased. By coincidence i just ordered some more today from woodworkers supply.

Bob here is a good YouTube link to a guy showing the pore filling method. It's a good start if you never did it before. It is a multi-part video. By the way i use a walnut filler for basicilly everything including oak and mohogany. I like the darker contrast that it brings out of the grain. If you are going to stain the oak a certain stain color like golden oak for example you need to stain allow it to dry well then seal using a dewaxed blond shellac like ZINSSER BULLS EYE shellac sanding sealer. If you just pore fill it can darking the whole wood to a color you weren't going for. The sealing makes sure only the pores get filled. Oak may take up to two coats to totally fill the pores since oak pores are large compared to other woods..Mike

I'm a paste filler guy too. I recently bought some Lawrence-McFaddin (mahogany) from Stew-mac and really like it. It doesn't shrink back very much, and if you are FP'ing shellac and see some unfilled pores, you can spot fill between sessions of FP'ing.

I've tried epoxy, paste and CA, but now, my only method of pore filling is pumice. You can't beat it`s color matching and ease of use, not to mention it`s pretty harmless...

Is it true the pumice breaks down into an almost transparent filler when used? I ask since its an off white color material. I have also heard of using rottenstone. Have you ever used that. I might actually look into the pumice method. It seems to be a tradition method with classical guitar builders...Mike

I don't think you want to use rottonstone. It does not clear like pumice. It will make a grey mess. It think it's also to fine, as it's mostly used for polishing.
