Here's my first build, which I've had strings on for a few days now. It's an OM, 24.5" scale. Back an sides are sapele mahogany, top sitka spruce, bridge, fingerboard and headplate macassar ebony. The sides, back and top are from LMI, various sources for everything else. The side were pre-bent by LMI (actually they were in their "oops" pile, having been incorrectly bent for a customer that wanted a dread.) The back was part of the set and was already joined. I also had the fretboard slotted and radiused. Most everything else (excepting the purflings, rosette, strings, tuners and bridge pins) was fabricated by me. Oh, and the reverse kerfings are mahogany which I got from Bob Cefalu. The body is finished with true oil, and the neck with a tung oil/beeswax finish. I used egg whites as a pore filler per Kim's tutorial. I started this last March and have been working on it in my spare time. I don't make a lot of posts here, but I've learned a lot by reading here, so thanks to you all for sharing your knowledge.

Oh, yes, the case is an access stage 3 case which I got from Eben Atwater, a very nice case for the price.

Beautiful looking guitar Joe. [:Y:] I see it looks like you have Nylon Strings on it. Did you use fan bracing or X bracing. I've been contemplating building a classical with X bracing. :)

Looks wonderful, Joe. Well done, sir! Got any more photos?

I, too, love those Access cases.

Don't leave us in suspense -- how does she sound?

Ken

Very, very classy. I love the look of the dark bridge on the very light spruce top. Your first? Congrats!

Hi, everyone,

Thanks for all the kind words. I had a good time building it and so far I'm enjoying playing it. I think it sounds pretty good at this point, but I don't really have a reference point for a newly built guitar. The trebles sound "sweet" to me, and the bass and midtones are reasonably well balanced, to my ear, at least.

Bill: the strings are steel strings, medium weight d'addario phosphor bronze. The bracing is conventional martin style X bracing, which I advanced a bit towards the soundhole, since the scale is short. Fine gauge strings were too floppy for me, and bass is much better with the medium weight strings.

Joe

PS: can anybody tell me if I can upload a sound file here? If so I will try to post one. (It will be me playing, I warn you!)

I'd be the wrong one to ask how to upload a sound clip here, but I have heard them before on the forum.

Nice looking guitar.

there are quite a few places that will host your files, free. you need to find a place like that and give us a link to it. soundclick is one such place.

i'm looking forward to a soundclip [:Y:]

I have to agree with the comment "clean" ..... it just oozes that !!!! It looks really great for a number one. You should be very proud - thats a major accomplishment.

Great first instrument Joe! Congratulations. It's really great to string up that first one and hear it sing. It sounds very good by the way.... I like the Tru-Oil finish on the body and the nice clean look of the guitar. Now you're hooked... Keep up the good work.
