Ok, here's a stupid question for you.

i'm installing my truss rod it's a U profile with a rod in it, open side up(towards fretboard) or down?

The open side (usually has tape on it that's not supposed to be removed) goes down.

This side down, with tape intact.

Since it adjusts both ways, you could install it either way up, surely?

Well, yes. Sort of. The first neck I ever built was for an electric bass. I put the double-action truss rod in upside down, and it worked fine, except the direction to turn the adjuster was the opposite of what one normally expects. Clockwise would increase relief instead of reducing it. This is what will happen if you put the truss rod in with the tape side up.
