I am going to use EmTech 6000 on the Harp. Pray for me.

Is this stuff really non-flamable?

I am going to spray then put it in a box I am building. 18" deep, 2 feet wide, 4 feet tall. On top is a ventialtion fan (bathroom) 50 CFM. On both sides at bottom are 12"x12" Filtrete filters, 1750s. Front door swings shut and is tightened down with 10 knobs arround the periphery. Weather seal between door and box. Box material is 1/8" masonite painted gloss white (no exposed fibers)

The frame is on the outside, so no wood fibers in the box. This box is big enough to hold any guitar I want to build including the harp. No Nitro. Yes, some shellac. Issues with that?

When you look inside the box, all you will see is white gloss surface, silicone caulking (clear) and the occasional screw head. Yes, you will see the filters and fan cover.

Thoughts?

I don't know anything about spraying or spray booths but I will definately pray for you! It sounds like you don't need it with all your preparations, but you got it!

Would some mod please delete that? It appears to be an encouragement to search out meaning which then leads to bad websites. (please delete this one too)

I think your drying box is overkill. The finish should dry quick enough that you could just leave the guitar hanging where you spray it unless your kicking up a lot of dust in the area.

Any real concern about flammability should be about the overspray during the actual spraying. What are you doing about that?

Since it's water based, you're probably ok but I would just make a call to the manufacturer and ask them. I wouldn't mind knowing myself since I just received a can. Let us know if you check.

Your drying cabinet sounds nice if for no other reason then to provide the finish a nice protected place to harden up. I always just let things stay where they are hanging or sitting and don't do anything to create dust while the finish is still tacky.

Maybe it is overkill. Who knows. But dust happens no matter what you do. I checked the can and on the side it says ZERO for flammability. Over spray goes out the garage door. Or I could hang a large sheet of plastic or tarp behind it? The drying booth cost me $100 including fan.

Just thought about another benefit... in cold weather, I can place a small electrical heater near the input. No bringing the expoy into the house!

Good gosh! 5 days of the flu and now two people have misread me! (I got chastized over in the egg forum).

Stephen, I took no offense what so ever. Not even sure what that is about. So I appologise for making you feel like you had to appologise!!

I will try to maintain a low profile till the flu wears off. Only reason I am in here so dang much is I am too sick to be in the shop.

OH!!!! I get it!!!!! Stephen, last night a spammer hit the website and posted nonsense messages on this and other threads. It was between yours and my comment about "please delete that..." Notice that I also asked the mods to delete my message so as to not create any confusion (which it did). Again, had I thought about it, I would not have asked it to be deleted like that! So sorry!!!! Hope you can now see the humor in that.

Hey Mike,

ya, your booth is a bit overkill, but not to worry, you won't have to worry about the guitar at all. The EM6000 drys pretty quick (like in an hour or less) so you don't have to worry about dust settling into the finish. And there is very little smell from the off gassing, I could actually get rid of those doors that make up my semi-knock down spray booth.

I'm pretty confident that the EM6000 is non-flammable as that's one of the benefits of using a WB finish.

I am now fully restored! Please post a photo of your spray booth when you are feeling better. I hate dust and I am not sure your idea is too much trouble to go to.

OK, are you guys serious????? I do NOT need any of this? Just hang a wire over the garage door rail? and hang the guitar from that? And dust is not an issue?

If this is true, I am taking all the stuff back to the store.

Man, I don't blame you Stephen. A lot of guys would have just ripped into me for that. I read, and re-read your post and mine over and over and I just could not figure it out. Then I noticed my post below yours. Even so, I had to think about it for a minute. What the hey?

These other guys (whom I respect) have really got me thinking about not doing the booth. I got so wrapped around the axle with nitro... not using that now. I am going to test spray an OM I have to see how it works out.

Mike, this is all I have in my shop (mind you it's in my spray booth) and it's not sealed at all. After the finish has set, I also leave the plastic booth doors open as well as the cabinet doors to try and get the guitar body at the same temperature as the rest of the shop.



It's just a simple cabinet to protect my guitars while they off gas. Once the finish is set (like I said, only an hour) you can start cutting and sanding and you won't have to worry about any getting in the finish.

Having a heated shop does help the total cure time to come down. And honestly, after a couple of days, you could just bring it inside the house to cure, maybe in the basement. The WB is so low of VOC's that there is little worry (I'd check with Jeff Wiess at Target to make sure) during the cure stage.

So, just a simple wall cabinet should do the trick? (one with doors that can close?)
