Has anyone tried this? It seems to have a texture nearly the same as McFadden UV pore fill. Seems you could goop it on quite thick to really shove it in the pores and then wipe off the excess. And, being varnish, could you use waterbase on top?
Thanks

I assume he's talking about the gel varnishes, like Bartley. They are thickened, and go on nicely with a rag. They work well for chairs. I do not know about other applications than for a final finish, and have no idea if they would be reasonable to use on a guitar.

The specific product I have is called 'Circa 1850 Antique Paste Varnish'. The label says it's a gelled modified polyuerethane varnish. And yeah, you can rub it on with a rag, which is convenient. I've done a few guitars (give aways) with it when I've decided to eat the guitar and not put any more time into it. It actually feels great on necks, and on a personal guitar seems to be holding up alright as an insta-finish, but it's definitely not something I'd bring to market. However, I thought it's ease of application and quick build up time might make it useful as a filler. I'll try it once I guess, there's but one way to find out for sure. I seem to recall being told that using waterbase over varnish is a no-no. Can anyone confirm or deny?
